How to Store Perfume Properly

Heat is the main enemy

Warmth accelerates the chemical reactions that break down aromatic materials. A bottle kept above roughly 25°C for long stretches will lose brightness noticeably within a year.

In a South African summer, an interior cupboard is dramatically better than any shelf near a window.

Sunlight

UV light breaks down fragrance molecules and can visibly change the colour of the juice. Tinted glass helps a little; darkness helps far more.

If you like displaying bottles, display them somewhere that never receives direct sun, and accept that a displayed bottle is a bottle you should use rather than hoard.

Humidity and the bathroom myth

The bathroom is the most common storage place and the worst one. Every shower produces a swing in both temperature and humidity, and that cycle is exactly what degrades a fragrance fastest.

Move the bottle to a bedroom drawer or a wardrobe. It is a one-minute change that extends the useful life of the bottle by years.

Keep bottles closed and upright

Air exposure oxidises fragrance. Keep the cap on, store bottles upright so the juice does not sit against the atomiser seal, and avoid decanting unless you have a proper airtight travel atomiser.

Should you keep the box?

Yes, if you have space. The box blocks light, buffers temperature swings and protects the bottle from knocks. It is the simplest storage upgrade available and it costs nothing.

How long does fragrance last unopened?

Stored cool, dark and sealed, most eau de parfum remains in good condition for three to five years, and often longer. Once opened, expect two to three years of the composition performing as intended.

Signs it has turned: a sour or metallic opening, a noticeably darker colour than when new, or a fragrance that smells mostly of alcohol.
