How to Buy Fragrance as a Gift

Start with the person, not the bottle

Think about how they present themselves. Someone precise and understated is unlikely to enjoy a dense gourmand, however impressive it is. Someone who enjoys being noticed will find a quiet clean musk disappointing.

Their wardrobe, their home and the products they already buy are all better evidence than a bestseller list.

Find out what they already wear

The single most useful piece of information is the name of one fragrance they have finished. Not one they own — one they finished. That tells you what they actually reach for.

If you can photograph the bottles on their shelf, do. The families will usually cluster, and that cluster is your target.

Safe profiles when you're unsure

If you have no information at all, the lowest-risk profiles are clean musks, soft woods and light citrus-floral compositions. They are widely likeable and rarely offensive.

• Avoid: heavy oud, dense gourmands and strong tuberose unless you know they love them
• Avoid: anything marketed as 'a version of' a designer fragrance
• Prefer: moderate intensity over statement intensity

The discovery set solves the problem
