Hydration During South African Summer
Practical hydration guidance for high-heat days in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and the Cape.
Why summer hydration is different here
High-altitude dry heat in Gauteng, humid coastal heat in KwaZulu-Natal and long dry days in the Cape all pull fluid out of you at different rates. Thirst is a late signal, not an early one.
Water is not always enough
When you sweat heavily you lose sodium, potassium and magnesium along with water. Replacing only the water can leave you still feeling flat. That is the case electrolytes are designed for — not everyday desk hydration.
A simple daily approach
- Start with a glass of water before your first coffee
- Keep a filled bottle within arm's reach of where you work
- Add electrolytes on heavy-sweat days: training, outdoor work, long travel
- Watch urine colour rather than counting litres
When to get help
Dizziness, confusion, cramping that won't settle or an inability to keep fluids down are medical issues. Seek care rather than reaching for a sachet.
