An office fragrance should be noticeable at conversational distance and invisible beyond it. Colleagues should register that you smell good when they are near you, and nothing at all from across the room.

This is a projection question rather than a quality question. Some of the most expensive fragrances in the world are entirely wrong for an open-plan office.

Profiles that tend to work

Fresh, clean and lightly woody compositions are the safest ground. They read as groomed rather than perfumed, which is exactly the impression most people want at work.

• Citrus and neroli: bright and unobtrusive
• Clean musks: soft, skin-like, hard to object to
• Light woods such as cedar and dry vetiver: grounded without sweetness
• Sheer florals: recognisable without heaviness

Profiles that usually don't

Dense gourmands, big ambers and oud-forward compositions are built to be noticed. In an office they can feel like someone talking loudly through a meeting.

This is not a rule about quality or taste. It is a rule about shared air.

How much to apply

One to two sprays is the office standard for an eau de parfum. Apply to the base of the neck rather than the wrists if you shake hands often.

Because of nose fatigue you will stop smelling your own fragrance within about twenty minutes. Do not re-apply on that basis — re-apply on a schedule, if at all, not on a feeling.

Consider the environment

Air-conditioned offices are dry and mute projection, which tempts over-application. Small meeting rooms do the opposite and concentrate it. Healthcare settings, laboratories and some client environments have fragrance-free policies you should simply respect.

If a colleague mentions sensitivity or headaches, take it at face value and scale back. It costs nothing.

A simple test

Apply, wait twenty minutes, and ask someone at home whether they can smell you from two metres away. If yes, that is one spray too many for an office.
